Overview

A local representative will pick you up from your hotel to drive you to the control booth “El Cura” to start the hike towards the Sulfur Mines of the Sierra Negra Volcano, which has one of the largest calderas in the world, with a diameter of approximately 10 kilometres. This walk covers a total distance of 22 km (13 miles) round trip that you can do on foot or on horseback (optional).

The path where you walk passes through the south side of the caldera where you can see how big it is, this path only reaches the western part of the caldera, from there you will no longer be able to ride (if you go on horseback) so that you will have to descend on foot towards the interior of the caldera along a slightly steep path, then you will continue until you cross a sulfur sandy area until you finally reach the center of the Sulfur Mines, where you will see some fumaroles between rocks that go from white to yellow and orange tones.

In the rainy season the caldera and the path that leads to it are surrounded by mist that prevents a view of the surrounding landscape while in summer the view of the landscape is impressive.
