The ancient Peruvians have used different ways to bury their dead, in this 3-hour tour you will see one of them, the tombs or Chullpas of Sillustani in the department of Puno on the heights of Lake Umayo.
The Chullpas of Sillustani are one of the most visited tourist attractions in Puno before going sailing on Lake Titicaca, these Chullpas were the burial place for the nobility of the Kolla culture, ancient Peruvians residing in these lands. The Chullpas of Sillustani are located in the heights surrounding Lake Umayo.
These tombs are very peculiar, they were built as small towers with a cylindrical shape that widen as they go up, these tombs were built by the Kolla culture, however after being conquered by the Incas in the 15th century, the Incas also continued with the practice of these constructions for the burials of their nobles in these areas of the highlands. The corpses were wrapped in fetal form and the opening of the chullpas faces east where the sun rises in allusion to a new rebirth.
