The great Lake Titticaca shares its waters with the country of Bolivia. In the Peruvian part there are 2 natural islands and small artificial islands called “The Uros” where indigenous people who speak little Spanish still live. This two-day tour is designed for you to spend the night with a family from Amantaní Island and learn about their customs and a little more about the history and myths of the lake.

Lake Titicaca is the highest lake in the world, it is located at 3800 meters (12,467 feet) above sea level. It is said that this lake was the place where the great Inca God Wiracocha, creator of the world, created the sun so that its inhabitants, the men of these lands, could live their happy lives.

After visiting the Uros your boat will take to Taquile Island which is very famous for its weaving technique. This island has very beautiful landscapes and an impressive lake view.

Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, the inhabitants of its islands speak the Quechua and Aymara dialects. Your first visit will be to the Uros Islands, which are artificial “floating islands” made of reeds (totoras) by the same inhabitants, in these island live about 4 to 7 families, in total the Uros form an archipelago of about 70 islands. The reeds (totoras) also serve to build their homes and the rafts called “Caballitos de Totora” which they use to navigate the lake from island to island or until the city of Puno.

Your next stop after visiting Los Uros, will be the Amantaní Island where you will be received by the families living on the island wearing their typical costumes, there you will be assigned a local family to spend the night and live with them and their customs (or if you prefer you can request to spend the night in a local hotel). In the afternoon your assigned family will take you on a hike up to the top of Pachamama Mountain to see the sunset over Lake Titicaca.

After watching the sunset you will go down to the town square and meet with your host family for dinner at their home, at dinner you will taste dishes prepared with native ingredients, at the end of dinner your host family will dress you in their typical costumes to head towards the communal hall to celebrate a small traditional party with music and dance where you can share with other guests and families of the island. The next morning you will have an early breakfast and say goodbye to this beautiful experience to go to Taquile Island and continue the tour.

The inhabitants of Taquille Island are weavers and are very well organized to sell their woven crafts among the visitors, they keep the accounting of each sale made. The representative garments of the island are the “chullos”, hats that have ear covers and the “calendar belts” that represent the agricultural cycle of each season of the year. During your tour you can explore the island and the town center. The entire island gives you access to breathtaking views of Lake Titicaca. Lunch time will take you to a restaurant in the town and then you will return by boat to the city of Puno.
