There is a shorter Inca Trail experience that lasts 2 days and one night, however it is just as exciting as the longer version because in the same way it allows you to know how the ancient Peruvians did to reach the citadel of Machu Picchu. The train that goes to Machu Picchu brings you closer to km 104 where you must go down to start the Inca trail passing through the ruins of Wiñay Wayna and then reach the impressive Machu Picchu.
The day before the walk you will meet with your guide for a briefing and clarify any doubts you may have about the walk.
Day 1
On the day of the walk, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in the Sacred Valley (Urubamba or Ollantaytambo) between 6:30 and 7:30 AM to take you to the Ollantaytambo train station where you will board the Expedition train that leaves at 7: 45 AM (train schedule may vary based on group size or train seat availability)
Once you reach Km 104, where you will be at a height of 2100 meters (6890 feet), you will get off the train and continue your walk passing through beautiful waterfalls until you reach the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna which is located on top of a mountain and, in the lower part of the mountain the ancient Peruvians built platforms for their crops that you will see as well.
The next step is to go to Inti Punku (Sun´s Gate) for an hour and a half, from there you will be able to see a different face of Machu Picchu from the one seen when you enter the citadel on a regular way, here you can take all the photos you want and unwind for a moment.
Now begins the descending passing by Machu Picchu without entering.
Finally, you will take a bus down to Aguas Calientes town to spend the night at the hotel of your choice, there in Aguas Calientes you can find some good restaurants, bars or cafes to hang out and enjoy Peruvian cuisine and drinks.
Day 2
Early in the morning you take the bus that goes up to the citadel of Machu Picchu for the guided tour of 2 and a half hours, then you can explore the citadel on your own for a maximum total of 4 hours (including the guided tour).
In the afternoon, after exploring Machu Picchu, you take the bus back to Aguas Calientes town to return by Expedition train which departs at 2:55 and arrives at 4:31 PM to Ollantaytambo (train schedule may vary based on group size or train seat availability). Finally from there you will be transferred to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.
