Overview

Visiting the Huayna Picchu mountain is the activity that complements your visit to Machu Picchu because once you climb the mountain you will get an impressive view of the Inca citadel. Hikers will find themselves at 2,720 meters above sea level (8,923 feet) and the hike cannot last more than 2 hours because there is a limit on the number of people who visit the mountain.

Going up to Huayna Picchu is to visit a place that the Incas considered sacred, the legend says that this mountain was home to virgins and priests, those who were closer to heaven and therefore to the protection of the “Inti” (Sun God), the mountains were the “Apus” or protective spirits.

The path to the mountain are steps made of stones that today have been reinforced with thick cables to help visitors to climb more safely.

Entrance tickets to Huayna Picchu must be purchased at least one or two months before your arrival in Peru, so you cannot miss out on this exciting experience. However, if you are traveling with children or the elderly, you should take into consideration that children under 12 and those over 60 cannot do this walk because it is very dangerous.

To ascend the mountain you must be a true “lover of danger” as climbing could cause you vertigo because the climb is quite steep but once at the top of Huayna Picchu, you can appreciate the citadel of Machu Picchu in all its splendor and when descending you must not forget to pass through the Temple of the Moon.

The ideal time to go up to Huayna Picchu is in the first shift, entering from 7 to 8 AM if you do it during the dry season (from March to October) and if you do it in the rainy season (from November to March) the best time visiting the mountain would be the second shift, entering from 10 to 11 AM.
