Most of the destinations to visit in the department of Cusco are located in the Sacred Valley, from there you can visit the community of Chincheros and marvel at the salt mines of Maras and the circular farming platforms of Moray.
Chinchero
The adventure begins 30 kilometers (18.60 miles) north of the imperial city of Cusco by visiting Chincheros and its market of colorful textiles made by hand by the inhabitants themselves, where you can also learn the ancient techniques of dyeing fabrics used since ancient times and take the opportunity to buy beautiful sweaters, woven scarves, looms among other items. Apart from the market, you can visit the town church that is located a few steps from the main town square.
Maras
Further north of Chinchero you can visit the town of Maras and its salt mines, which are still an important source of economic income for the inhabitants of the area. If you look from afar, you will have the impression of seeing a mosaic made of small ponds of salt water that dry up to make up the Maras salt mines. Visiting the small town of Maras you can also appreciate the contrast of architectural styles as it has some churches and buildings from the colonial era.
Moray
Going up even further north is Moray and its circular platforms that according to some scholars, the land where they were built was depressed by the effect of the rains that deepened the terrain, thus the ancient Peruvians took the opportunity to build the platforms in a circular and descending way to show that crops could grow less meters (feet) high.
