The majestic Andean Condor, the largest flying bird in the world, cannot be observed or photographed at a more accessible location anywhere else on the earth. Only 78 kilometers away, we will travel to the greatest condor colony in Chilean Patagonia. After a brief hike, we will reach the base of the rock wall that the condors use as a sanctuary. Binoculars will enable us to view, think about, and take a photo as a souvenir of our stay.
A great variety of birds, including seagulls, caranchos, caiquenes, zorzales, and aguila mora, as well as guanacos and ñandues occasionally can be seen in the area as we take in the vastness of the Patagonian pampas, can be seen during the hour-long journey from Punta Arenas to the commune of Rio Verde. A brief discussion of the Andean Condor’s way of life will be followed by a visit to “Cerro Palomares,” where these birds spend the entire year. In order to get a near encounter and to be able to snap the greatest pictures in the area, the goal is to approach as close as possible to be able to view with the specialized bird-sighting equipment that will be provided by the stay’s keepers.
