Overview

The city of Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire and is known to the world as the Archaeological Capital of America. In the center of the city you will see the fusion of culture that was generated with the conquest of the Spanish and on the outskirts you will find the vestiges of the Inca culture that are still standing to tell us more about Peruvian history.

In the city tour you will visit one of the most impressive buildings that represents for the Cusco culture the struggle between the polytheistic Inca religion and the monotheistic Catholic religion of the Spanish, it is the Santo Domingo Convent built on the walls of the ancient Inca temple Coricancha. The Convent of Santo Domingo was inaugurated in 1666 and its baroque style altar bears the gold that the Spanish took from the Coricancha temple during its destruction.

You will also know the main square with its Cathedral and the fountain where the statue of the Inca Pachacutec stands.

After touring the city, you will go outside to see the Inca fort of Sacsayhuaman built with huge rocks. It is believed that this historical enclosure, which served to prohibit the entry of the Spanish, also has some astrological significance as the rest of Inca buildings.

A few minutes from Sacsayhuaman are the ruins of Qenqo that apparently was a religious sanctuary where sacrifices with animals were offered and the ruins of Tambomachay where there are sources that still filter the water from distant springs brought to this area thanks to a complex circuit of Inca aqueducts.

In front of Tambomachay is another of the attractions that you will visit on this city tour, it is Puka Pukara, a military construction that is located on top of a hill and that will allow you to take panoramic photos of the surroundings.

After the city tour you will return to your hotel with a broader knowledge of the culture of modern Cusco.
