It is interesting to visit the Chauchilla cemetery so that you know first-hand how the ancient Peruvians of the southern coast of Peru buried their dead, how they took care of every detail so that they woke up in the afterlife. In this cemetery you can see the mummies in their original tombs, open-air tombs that have been carefully restored to show you as they left them. In these tombs you can see all the objects that accompanied the corpses that were buried. Some tombs were looted by the “huaqueros”, unscrupulous people who go to archaeological sites to steal and sell the items to the highest bidder.
This cemetery was used in the early 3rd century AD. and the remains of the corpses have been fairly well preserved due to the arid climate of the place, thus the teeth, hair and clothing of the corpses were found in good condition. The studies carried out indicate that the mummification process and the resin found in their clothes also contributed to the non-decomposition of the bodies, however there are more delicate mummies that you can see in the small site museum of the cemetery.
