Overview

Visit the oldest city in America in a single day, Caral waits for you to learn a little more about the ancient Peruvian culture of the coastal area and its extensive valleys.

The citadel of Caral is located near the valley of the Supe river, about 200 km north of the city of Lima and claims to be the second oldest ruin in the world and the first oldest in America.

To get to Caral you will have to do a journey of almost 4 hours by car leaving from Lima at 7:00 AM and upon arrival at the site the tour will last approximately 1 to 1 hour and a half with a time for lunch of 1 hour after that you will start the way back. The road to get to Caral is long and winding so this tour lasts all day long, arriving in Lima at approximately 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM.

According to experts, Caral was a prosperous citadel that had about 3,000 inhabitants in its peak. These ruins are almost 5,000 years old and among their buildings you can see houses, pyramids, temples, squares, and even a construction in the form of an amphitheater.

It took about 40 years from its discovery to the first excavation work that Caral could come to light. During the excavations, a mat made of cane that wrapped the remains of a child was found, according to carbon studies, this mummy dates back to 2900 BC.

Caral has an impressively large pyramid called the “Greater Pyramid” that rises by 18 meters (60 feet) and has a dimension of almost four soccer fields, another of the most notorious attractions of Caral that you will see, is the amphitheater, a circular plaza that was in front of one of the smallest pyramids.
