Overview

This tour takes you to visit the Arequipa valley that accompanies the Socabaya river with its beautiful and extensive green landscapes of this countryside, the Santa Catalina Convent located in the center of the “White City of Arequipa” and other tourist places.

Arequipa is called the white city for its ancient constructions made with volcanic stone of Sillar, this white panorama can be appreciated from the viewpoint of the upper neighborhood of Yanahuara, from there you can even see the Misti volcano as well as the Pichu Pichu and Chachani volcanoes.

On your journey through the countryside you will see the platforms of Paucarpata, lands specially tilled for cultivation on the slopes of the mountains that look like a mosaic of green colors and that recall the old traditional platforms used by the Inca.

Another attraction that you will visit on this tour is the Sabandía Mill built in the 17th century. This mill was the main supplier of flour to feed the population. Over the years, both the property and the mill deteriorated, however the support of private entities has restored it to keep it in operation to this day, thus achieving that it is declared as a Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

The panoramic view of the Arequipa countryside is impressive. Taking the Paisajista avenue you will easily reach your next stop, the “Goyeneche Palace” or “Founder’s Mansion” one of the most beautiful residences in Arequipa that was built in the 17th century and which includes in its structure a church since this ancient house once functioned as a bishop’s dwelling. Like many of the old buildings in Arequipa, it has also been restored many times due to earthquakes.

Finally you will know the Santa Catalina Convent that began to be built in 1579 and that covers an entire block because it is a huge complex that housed the nuns of the elite classes of the time as well as ladies of Arequipa society who entered to strengthen their virtues as women, today there are fewer nuns in this cloister and part of their livelihood is the sale of homemade pastries that are offered in the convent coffee shop. This convent is quite extensive like a small city within another with streets that connect patios, cells of the nuns, the main chapel of the convent and even the place where the old sisters who lived in this convent lie, all of it built in Sillar stone.
