Overview

This bird watching tour gives you the opportunity to see the majestic Andean Condor flying over the Ecuadorian Andean heights, as well as other types of birds that soar through the skies of the central dry valleys and high paramos.

The tour will take us to Guango Lodge, a specialized place for bird watching where you can also see some hummingbirds that arrive at the feeders that have been conditioned through the trails that you will travel in search of the birds in this area.

Itinerary

Day 1:
The expedition leaves early to Guango Lodge, meanwhile on the way you will be able to admire the different types of landscapes. Thus we will pass through the dry central valley where you will see some agricultural crops and chaparral forests with small trees tolerant to drought, then we will begin the ascent towards the high paramos where you must have your binoculars and camera ready to capture the impressive Andean condor or the Andean Gull among other species that fly freely over the beautiful landscapes where you can even see the Antisana Volcano with its snowy peak and beautiful high Andean mountains that seem to disappear into the horizon which facilitates bird watching.

The bird watching area is called the Papallacta Pass, there you will see some birds such as Ecuadorian Hillstar, Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant, seedeaters birds and with good luck, some Giant Conebill in the Polylepis forest areas, when the sky it is very clear.

The high altitude temperate forests bring with them other types of birds such as Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, the beautiful green hummingbird (Viridian Metaltail), among others. After having seen all these birds and having taken many photos, you will finally arrive at Guango Lodge near dusk, before the day gets dark, which gives you even the opportunity to see the hummingbirds approach the feeders that have been placed for them, so you can see some Tourmaline Sunangel and its iridescent colors, the Sword-billed Hummingbird with its long beaks, the White-bellied Woodstar and its elegant fly, as well as other species of hummingbirds.

To end the day and warm up your body, you will enjoy a delicious dinner and a "Canelazo", a hot drink made with cinnamon boiled in water, fruit juice and cane alcohol.

However, the day is not over yet, as it is possible to take a walk to try to see some nocturnal birds such as owls.

Day 2:
For this 2nd day the bird watching will be done through the trails and hummingbird feeders of the Guango Lodge grounds so that you can appreciate the birds in detail, thus you can see the small Bar-bellied Woodpecker, the Blue-backed Conebill, Slaty and Pale-naped Brush-Finch among other mountain birds such as the colorful Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan. In the afternoon, you will enjoy a hot lunch in the dining room near the hummingbird feeders.
