Overview

Visit the on-site museum and Archaeological Sanctuary of Pachacamac that in pre-Columbian times served as an oracle to which crowds from all over the Peruvian Andes pilgrimaged in search of predicting the future, controlling the movements of the earth for the benefit of their crops, answers to their doubts and solutions to their problems.

Pachacamac is a coastal citadel that is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the city of Lima in the Lurin Valley and that houses an important temple that was very visited by settlers of some cultures such as the Moche, Huari, Itchma, Nasca among others. for being a well-known oracle who could answer their questions and improve their future.

Pachacamac means “Soul of The Earth” or “The One Who Animates the World” that is why this archaeological sanctuary that consists of a complex circuit of pyramidal structures with temples was constituted as a very visited place for its functions as an oracle. Pachacamac is truly large, that according to archaeologists count a total of 17 pyramidal structures, a variety of temples, a cemetery and a number of wall paintings with polychrome motifs of plants, fish, geometric figures and human characters.

The Pachacamac site museum keeps important pieces found in the citadel as well as excavations that archaeologists are still exploring. As in many pre-Inca and Inca cultures, the Pachacamac complex also has a “Temple of the Sun”, going up to the top you can see the Lurin valley and the citadel in all its extension. During the tour you will also visit the Temple of the Virgins or Temple of the Chosen called Acllawasi, here lived virtuous women who were selected to be at the service of the main governor.

At the end of the tour, on your way back to Lima, you will pass to the district of Barranco, formerly known as a cultural and bohemian district of Lima.
