The largest and most famous private gold collection in Lima is in the Gold Museum of Peru, many of these pieces belonged to the Peruvian pre-Columbian cultures mostly from the north coast such as the gold Tumi and funeral masks of the Lambayeque culture, this museum also keeps ceramic pieces, original mummies, and textiles with beautifully crafted designs.
Because it is a shiny material, gold in Peruvian cultures was used as an ornament for temples and even their dead, that is why mummies have been found buried with a whole gold trousseau to elegantly cross to the other world. Among the gold objects that you can see in the museum, you will appreciate earrings, crowns, funeral masks, ceremonial knives, scepters and more objects from the central and northern cultures Nasca, Chimú, Moche, Sicán and others.
But not only gold is the protagonist of this private collection, but you will also be able to appreciate beautiful textiles that, apart from textile fiber, were adorned with inserts of colorful bird feathers and ceramics that have daily scenes of ancient Peruvians painted, thanks to these findings the Archaeologists and anthropologists have been able to study these cultures and discover how they lived in the past.
The gold museum also has a collection of weapons from different times and parts of the world, the collection includes about 20 thousand pieces that even belonged to great characters in Peruvian and world history, in that exhibition you can see swords that belonged to the Spanish Francisco Pizarro (conqueror of Peru) and weapons of other important figures such as the Peruvian heroes Francisco Bolognesi or Miguel Grau and characters from world history such as the Russian Tsars Alexander I and Nicolás II or Napoleon among others, there are also Egyptian knives, European armor, armor samurais and more. Fascinating!
