Overview

Machu Picchu remains a mystery for scholars, however they agree that the distribution of its buildings has an astrological meaning that is combined with the polytheistic religion of the ancient Incas inhabitants of this citadel.

To visit Machu Picchu starting from the Sacred Valley you must take the train that leaves from the Ollantaytambo station on a journey through the exuberant and rugged geography of the Peruvian highlands on a trip that takes approximately 2 hours.

During the tour of Machu Picchu you will see some very significant buildings for the ancient inhabitants of the citadel. Among them is the Royal Tomb, a cave to which some steps were added on the outside that led to the Temple of the Sun, these steps would seem to allow the Inca priests to climb to the top of an altar for ceremonies of religious nature. According to archaeologists, this Royal Tomb would have served as a mausoleum to bury the members of the highest levels and positions of the Inca Empire such as aristocrats, priests, members of the high army and members of the royal family.

Machu Picchu also has some sources where springs flowed and still flows the cristal waters, according the experts, some of these sources were used in sacred ceremonies.

Machu Picchu is full of important temples, the most important ones are located on the sides of the Main Square (Sacred Square). There you can see the Main Temple (with its altars), the House of the Priest and the best known is the Temple of the Three Windows.

Due to the structure and dimensions of the Machu Picchu Citadel, it is supposed to house a large population divided into three social classes: Royalty, Nobility and Ayllu, As well subdivided into two well-marked sectors: the Hanan (upper sector) with better elaborate buildings and mostly with religious meanings, and the Hurin (lower sector) where the houses of the working people were located but where, there were also some temples dedicated to their mythical gods such as the condor, in this case the buildings were more rustic.

After the guided visit to Machu Picchu and the time you have to explore on your own, you will go down to Aguas Calientes town for a delicious lunch in a good restaurant of the city where you will try some dishes with peruvian flavor to finally take the train back to Ollantaytambo.
